How is conversion rate calculated?

Your conversion rate is the number of conversions divided by the number of clicks, multiplied by 100. A rate of 3% means 3 clicks out of 100 end in a conversion, whether a sale, a lead or a call.

What counts as a good conversion rate?

It comes down to your industry, your offer and the quality of your traffic: there’s no standard figure. Compare yourself to your own history rather than to an average you found online. Tightly targeted traffic converts better than broad traffic, even at a higher cost per click.

Your conversion rate drives your budget

The higher your rate, the fewer clicks (and the less budget) you need for the same number of sales. That’s why it feeds straight into the budget calculation and the max bid. Improving your landing page often costs less than raising your bids.

Common questions

How do you calculate a conversion rate?

Divide the number of conversions by the number of clicks (or visitors) and multiply by 100. For example, 30 conversions from 1,000 clicks means a 3% conversion rate. In other words, it takes about 33 clicks to get one conversion.

What’s the difference between conversion rate and click-through rate (CTR)?

CTR measures the share of impressions that turn into clicks, before anyone reaches the site. Conversion rate measures the share of those clicks that end in an action (purchase, form fill, call) once people are on the site. The first reflects the ad; the second reflects the ad and the landing page together.

What’s a good conversion rate?

There’s no universal benchmark: the rate depends on the industry, the price, the type of conversion and the quality of the traffic. Your own history is the most reliable yardstick. A one-point gain in conversion rate can do as much for profitability as lowering your cost per click.
